Child Abuse Prevention Month: Recognizing the signs and taking action in Collier County
By Linda Goldfield, CEO of Youth Haven
April is nationally recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time for our community to come together around a shared responsibility: ensuring every child grows up safe, protected and supported.
This year, we are grateful to Collier County for issuing a proclamation recognizing April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. This important acknowledgment helps shine a light on a critical issue that demands not only awareness, but action, from all of us.
Each year, thousands of cases of child abuse and neglect are reported in our community. Behind every report is a child experiencing trauma no young person should endure. While these numbers are difficult to face, they also reflect a powerful truth that child abuse is preventable, and it is everyone’s responsibility to help prevent it.
One of the most important ways we can do that is by learning to recognize the signs of abuse and knowing what to do when we see them.
Abuse is not always obvious. It can present in many forms, whether physical, emotional or neglect, and often the signs are subtle. Some common indicators may include:
- Unexplained injuries or frequent bruising
- Sudden changes in behavior, such as withdrawal, anxiety or aggression
- Fear of going home or fear of certain individuals
- Poor hygiene or consistently unmet basic needs
- Delays in development or difficulty concentrating in school
- A child appearing overly compliant, watchful or anxious to please
No single sign confirms abuse, but patterns or combinations of these behaviors should raise concern.
At Youth Haven, we see firsthand the impact of trauma but also the incredible transformation that can happen when a child is given safety, stability and compassionate care. For more than 50 years, we have provided home, hope and healing to abused, neglected and homeless children and teens in Southwest Florida. But these vulnerable youth can only receive help if someone speaks up.
If you see something, say something. If you suspect abuse or neglect, report it.
In Florida, reports can be made to the Florida Abuse Hotline at 1-800-96-ABUSE (1-800-962-2873) or online at reportabuse.myflfamilies.com. You do not need proof; reasonable suspicion is enough. Your call could be the turning point in a child’s life.
Too often, abuse goes unreported because individuals are unsure, hesitant or assume someone else will step in. But protecting children requires all of us as neighbors, teachers, coaches, friends and community members to become advocates and take responsibility. One call can lead to intervention, support and safety.
Our mission is built on the belief that every young person deserves the opportunity to heal, grow and thrive. This April, I urge our community to do more than recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month. Learn the signs, trust your instincts and most importantly, take action.
Community members can also participate by wearing blue each Friday throughout April. Tag Youth Haven and share your support on social media to further help raise awareness and inspire others to take part. Because when it comes to protecting children, silence is not an option and together, we can create a safer future for every child.
