YOUTH HAVEN, INC. AWARDED $400,000 GRANT FROM NCEF

Naples, Fl (August 3, 2023). Youth Haven, Inc. is pleased to announce they’re recipients of a $400,000 grant from the Naples Children & Education Foundation, founders of the Naples Winter Wine Festival.

Funding from NCEF will benefit Youth Haven’s foster care and homeless teen programs by supporting its direct-line counselors, clinicians/staff, and Case Managers.

Youth Haven’s emergency shelters are Collier County’s only residential option for children and teens ages 10 -20. Its cottages provide a home, instill hope and create a safe place to help children in the foster care system begin to heal. Children are placed in temporary care by the State through different foster care agencies until a more permanent placement can be found. Youth Haven’s shelters house Southwest Florida’s youngest victims of abuse, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, without exception. The children stay for an average of 270 days, but sometimes much longer, depending upon their age and circumstances. Upon leaving, children are reunified with their parents, placed by the State with a safe relative, or placed with a foster home.

Youth Haven’s Homeless Teen Transitional Living Program is the only program in Collier County for youth experiencing homelessness and needing assistance in making a successful transition to self-sufficient and sustainable living. Youth Haven helps them heal from their severe trauma and build skills that promote healthy growth into adulthood. The program addresses the various developmental, educational, emotional, social, physical, and mental health needs of homeless youth and utilizes individual service plans. It offers life skills classes that promote independence and housing readiness. Its Transitional Living Cottage, Rob’s Group Home, provides comprehensive 24-hour care, with a more extended average stay for homeless unaccompanied youth ages 16 to 19. Rob’s Group Home offers homeless teens a safe and caring environment, a place to sleep, and access to intensive case management, educational support, nutritious meals, and medical and mental health services. The program focuses on high school graduation, job readiness, preparing for higher education, and strengthening community connections.

The Naples Children & Education Foundation, the founding organization of the Naples Winter Wine Festival, is improving the educational, emotional, and health outcomes of underprivileged and at-risk children. Through its annual grants and strategic initiatives, NCEF has impacted 60 of the most effective nonprofits in the community, providing over 300,000 children with the services and resources they need to excel. NCEF’s unique approach, which emphasizes collaboration between organizations and bridges public and private resources, has become a blueprint for how to transform a community, one issue at a time.

“Naples Children & Education Foundation’s grant will have a tremendous impact on the programs and services that Youth Haven offers to the children and teens that rely on Youth Haven,” said Linda Goldfield, Youth Haven CEO. “We’re extremely grateful for NCEF and the community’s support in raising these funds during the Naples Winter Wine Festival to support the underprivileged and at-risk children in the Naples community.”

YOUTH HAVEN RECOGNIZES ROLE MODELS IN HONOR OF FATHER’S DAY

Naples, Fl (June 14, 2023).

Imagine being a child and the person you look up to, the person you respect and admire the most, is also the person who is abusing and neglecting you. A mentor’s betrayal significantly impacts a child, creating feelings of fear, mistrust, and low self-esteem. Being removed from the abuse and placed in a safe foster care home removes the immediate threat of physical danger, but the long-lasting effects of the trauma endured by children and teens can be deadly if left untreated.

As Southwest Florida’s only emergency and residential shelter for boys and girls ages 10 – 20, Youth Haven is an immediate lifeline of safety, love, and compassion. The minute a child steps on Youth Haven’s campus, the staff begins the healing process and helps the child on their journey back to trust, confidence, and joy.

With Father’s Day upon us, we recognize and honor the strong male figures who have served as role models for the children and teens that rely on Youth Haven for Home, Hope, and Healing. These individuals, and so many more, have provided much-needed guidance, mentorship, and the stability they need while they heal.

Laquentin Cotton, also lovingly known as “Mr. Q,” serves as Director of Rob’s Group Home, Youth Haven’s shelter for unaccompanied homeless teens. Rob’s Group Home offers our homeless teens a safe and caring environment, a place to sleep, and access to intensive case management, educational support, nutritious meals, and medical and mental health services. Laquentin has gone above and beyond, ensuring the teens’ successful transition to adulthood. He has supported them every step of the way – while they have resided on our campus, as well, as helping them relocate into homes of their own – both locally and out of state, purchasing vehicles and furnishings, and even sharing some of his famous barbeque cooking skills with the teens. One teen that moved out after completing our program shared with Laquentin, “I realize I’m one of the lucky ones. That without Youth Haven and Rob’s, I would be in jail or dead. I’ll make you all proud, I promise.”

Two individuals who have implemented their sports background to go nine yards for the youth are Culmer St. Jean and Spencer Adkins. Culmer, Residential Manager, is a graduate of Lely High School in Naples, Florida. He played football in college for the Wisconsin Badgers and has given back to his community for over 15 years by coaching local high school football. Spencer, a graduate of Naples High School, played football for the University of Miami and the Atlanta

Falcons. Both can often be found mentoring the youth, sharing with them their life experiences. They engage the youth both mentally and physically, organizing basketball and football pickup games on Youth Haven’s 18.5-acre therapeutic campus.

“Youth Haven is committed to making transformational changes in the lives of the youth that arrive at our campus. Laquentin, Culmer, and Spencer, are incredible male role models that our youth look up to during an extremely vulnerable period of their lives. Their positive outlooks and dependability make them strong male role models, and we’re grateful they are part of our team,” said Linda Goldfield, Youth Haven CEO.

Youth Haven views challenges as opportunities to help each child gain confidence, independence, and success as they continue to strengthen the community they serve, laying the foundation for children and teens to have hope for a brighter, better future. To learn more, visit youthhavenswfl.org

Naples, Fl (May 4, 2023). Youth Haven, Inc. is pleased to announce they’re a recipient of a $15,000 grant from The League Club. Founded in 1972, Youth Haven is Collier County’s only residential and emergency shelter for boys and girls ages 10-19 who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, or homelessness.

The funds received will benefit the development of a “makerspace” on Youth Haven’s 18.5-acre therapeutic campus. This collaborative workspace sparks the imagination, learning, exploration, idea sharing, and development of original creations using both high-tech and no tech tools. The room will contain the tools and components necessary for the youth to launch hands-on activities, such as “STEAM,” which consists of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics.

Thirty-three grants were awarded to area nonprofits in Collier and Lee Counties during The League Club of Naples, Florida’s Briefcase Breakfast on April 14, 2023. The grants will address crucial needs in food, health, education, the arts, and our environment, reaching at least 30,000 people in Collier and Lee counties-individuals and families from newborns to senior citizens.

President Denise Hadley said, “The heart and soul of The League Club is our Community Involvement Committee. For over three decades, The League Club has addressed critical needs of at-risk adults and children in the areas of food scarcity, shelter, education, and the arts through grants to nonprofit agencies in Collier and Lee Counties.”

The League Club has supported 182 agencies over the 36 years they have given out grants totaling over $6.5 million. These monies are raised from the League Clubs Annual Fundraiser, Naples Tables, held every spring in Naples.

“Youth Haven is grateful for The League Club’s investment in our organization,” said Linda Goldfield, Youth Haven’s Chief Executive Officer. “The support we received will allow us to continue to provide transformational programs for the children and teens that rely on Youth Haven for Home, Hope, and Healing.”

YOUTH HAVEN A RECIPIENT OF SUPPORT FROM CC’S WISHLIST OF THE LAVIN FAMILY FOUNDATION

Naples, Fl (April 1, 2023).

Youth Haven was recently a recipient of in-kind funding from “CC’s Wishlist,” a program of the Lavin Family Foundation.

Several months ago, Carol Lavin Bernick, former CEO of Alberta Culver/Sally Beauty, identified Youth Haven as a possible recipient of their in-kind program. Carol’s staff visited the Youth Haven’s campus, met the children, assessed our needs, and selected us for a shopping day. According to www.ccswishlist.org, “CC’s Wish List is a unique program leveraging decades of corporate buying experience to purchase brand-new, quality items at incredibly low prices. These soft goods are donated in-kind to nonprofit organizations to further their community outreach in support of children, families, and individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and needs.”

Last month, Carol’s team arrived on our therapeutic campus with a moving truck full of goodies, including clothes, sneakers, bedding, stuffed animals, accessories, and more. While initially overwhelming, our children had an extraordinary experience shopping with her staff in the Telford building. Carol, who splits her time between Chicago and Naples, took a campus tour and generously committed $100,000 to support Rob’s Cottage.

Established in 1972, Youth Haven provides Home, Hope, and Healing to abused and neglected children and teens in Southwest Florid. Our 18.5-acre therapeutic campus houses 70 youth with a waking staff system that allows for around-the-clock specialized care. “It was delightful to see the children wearing head-to-toe selections from “CC’s Wishlist!” We are so fortunate to have so many generous donors, such as the Lavin Family Foundation, who recognize our work and want to serve as a positive influence in our children’s lives,” said Linda Goldfield, Youth Haven CEO.

All of the children & teens that come to Youth Haven have been abused, abandoned, neglected or are homeless. Founded in 1972 and in continuous operation for over 50 years, Youth Haven was established to fulfill an immediate need for emergency shelter for children who had been removed suddenly from a traumatic home situation. Our 18.5-acre therapeutic campus houses 70 youth with a waking staff system that allows for around-the-clock specialized care. Youth Haven views challenges as opportunities in helping each child gain confidence, independence and success as they continue to strengthen the community they serve; laying the foundation for children and teens to have hope for a brighter, better future.

Established in 1983, Child Abuse Prevention Month is an annual observance every April in the United States dedicated to raising awareness and preventing child abuse. “More than 1 million children are victims of child abuse and neglect each year, according to state child protective service agencies. Many victims don’t receive help because they are not reported to the system. These abused and neglected children span all ages, races, religions and socio-economic backgrounds. Child maltreatment includes actions that result in imminent risk of serious harm, death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation of a child under age 18 by a parent or caretaker. Everyone, including professionally mandatory reporters, should contact the Florida Abuse Hotline when they know or have reasonable cause to suspect that a child or a vulnerable adult has been abused, abandoned, neglected, or exploited. The Abuse Hotline Counselor will determine if the information provided meets legal requirements to accept a report for investigation.”1

There are four ways to make a report:

  1. By Telephone 1-800-96ABUSE  800-962-2873
  2. By Fax 800-914-0004

  4. By TTY 800-955-8771

“It’s crucial that we continue to raise awareness for this important cause and for the safety of our children and teens. If you know of any child or teen has been abused, please report it,” said Linda Goldfield, Youth Haven CEO.
